Inhalation Sedation
(“Happy Air”) for Children

We understand that visiting the dentist can sometimes feel worrying for children (and parents too!). At our practice, we want every child’s dental experience to be as positive and stress-free as possible. One way we can help is with inhalation sedation, often known as “happy air” or “laughing gas.”

What is
inhalation sedation?

Inhalation sedation is a safe and gentle way to help children relax during dental treatment. Your child breathes in a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small nosepiece. The gas works quickly, helping children feel calm, floaty or even a little giggly, while still being awake and able to talk to us throughout their treatment.

As soon as the nosepiece is removed, the effects wear off within a few minutes — meaning your child can usually go home and carry on with their day as normal.

When is it
recommended?

Inhalation sedation can be helpful in a range of situations. We may recommend it if:

  • Your child feels nervous or anxious about dental treatment, even with reassurance.

  • A longer or more involved procedure is needed, where sitting still might be difficult.

  • Your child has a strong gag reflex, making treatment uncomfortable.

  • Previous visits have been challenging, and we want to build a more positive experience.

  • Other behaviour management techniques aren’t enough on their own.

What to expect

on the day?

  1. Your child will sit comfortably in the dental chair.

  2. A soft nosepiece is placed gently over their nose.

  3. They’ll begin breathing the special “happy air.”

  4. Within a few minutes, most children feel calm, light and relaxed.

  5. We carry out the treatment while your child stays awake, able to chat and follow instructions.

  6. Once the nosepiece is removed, the effects wear off very quickly.

Most children describe it as a pleasant, even fun experience — helping them build confidence for future visits.

Safety and
monitoring

Inhalation sedation has been used safely in children’s dentistry for decades. Our team is specially trained in delivering sedation and will monitor your child throughout their appointment. The gas mixture is carefully adjusted for each child, and oxygen is always given at the end of the procedure to ensure a smooth recovery.

Side effects are very rare, though occasionally children may feel a little light-headed or a bit queezy — this usually passes quickly.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly does my child recover?
The effects wear off within minutes once the nosepiece is removed. Most children feel back to normal straight away and can return to school or play the same day.

Do they need to fast before the appointment?
No. Unlike a general anaesthetic, no fasting is needed. A light meal beforehand is fine.

Can my child go back to normal activities afterwards?
Yes. They can usually eat, drink and play as normal. We just recommend a little extra supervision for the rest of the day.

Will my child be asleep?
No. Inhalation sedation is not the same as a general anaesthetic. Your child will stay awake, aware and able to talk to us throughout.

Can I stay with my child?
Yes, parents are welcome to remain in the room if they wish.

Is it safe for all children?
Yes. Inhalation sedation has been used safely for decades in children’s dentistry. We will always check your child’s medical history before deciding if it’s suitable.

What does it feel like?
Children often say they feel floaty, light or giggly. Some may describe it as a “warm, relaxing” feeling.

Will my child remember the treatment?
Yes, but usually in a calmer, more positive way. Sedation doesn’t cause memory loss — it simply helps the child feel less anxious during the appointment.

Are there any side effects?
Side effects are rare. Occasionally children may feel a little sick or light-headed, but this usually passes quickly once the gas is stopped.

What if my child refuses the nosepiece?
We never force treatment. If your child is very anxious, we can take things slowly, let them try the nosepiece at their own pace, or look at alternative options.
